Frequently asked questions
Everything you might want to know before your ear wax removal appointment.
How do I know if I have too much ear wax and might need it removed?
The common signs of excessive ear wax are:
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- Dizziness, or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Discomfort or a blocked feeling in the ear
We’ll check your ears at your appointment. Your deposit covers that initial check — so if we find your ears are clear, or there’s no reason to carry out the procedure, the deposit is all you pay and there’s nothing further.
Do I need to do anything before my appointment?
Yes please! Use Earol or olive oil drops twice a day for at least 3 days before your appointment. Please don’t use any drops that contain hydrogen peroxide. You can buy these at your local chemist, or pop into The Clear Ear Room to purchase them.
Why do I need to soften the ear wax?
Using olive oil drops or Earol makes the wax softer, so it’s quicker, easier and more comfortable to remove.
Is it painful?
No, it shouldn’t be painful. Using olive oil beforehand softens the wax and makes it easier and gentler to remove.
How soon can I be seen?
Our online booking system lets you book the next available appointment, or a time to suit you. You can also call or email to book an out-of-hours appointment, which is £85.
How do you remove the wax?
We use microsuction, the gold standard for ear wax removal. We sometimes also use warm-water irrigation if the wax is stubborn and it’s safe to do so.
Is there any aftercare I need to do?
We’ll give you aftercare advice and talk it through with you, along with a leaflet to take home at the end of your appointment.
How often do I need ear wax removal?
That depends on the individual. We can discuss this with you at your appointment — you might prefer a regular appointment, or to book one as and when you feel you need it.
